u + us = hope for children

We are confronting the Romanian street child and orphan crisis with adoption and foster care.

OUR TEAM

There are no, “Lone Rangers” in successful ministry.  We are thankful to have two godly, talented and dedicated women on our team.  Julianna Citiriga is our social worker.  Julianna has earned her Master’s in Social Work, her first job was in the capital city of Bucharest before joining us she worked as a case manager in foster care.  All the parents love to talk to Julianna.  She herself was adopted, and so she has a lot of first hand knowledge to pass on.  Dana Fagadar is one of our psychologists.  She is a faithful Christian who is able to shed insight on some of the most complicated situations.  Dana has run a Crisis Pregnancy Center in our town for years and we are happy to have her on our team.

Building bridges into Romanian Churches and Government offices has taken a lot of work. We have overcome setbacks and frustrations. Now we are in a good place and it seems like the progress is snowballing, collaborations lead to more collaborations.

We are members of ARFO.  ARFO is the Alliance for a Romania Without Orphans. In our alliance we have around 30 Evangelical organizations and churches all dedicated to getting kids into homes and out of orphanages. Our motto is, “A family for every child.”

Membership in ARFO helps us to punch above our weight, working to change adoption and foster care laws and teaching hundreds of caregivers and parents through ARFO organized events. ARFO is about displaying unity in Christ, and accomplishing together what none of us could do as individual organizations.

Give -Thank you!

BECAUSE THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR A LOVING HOME.

PRE-ADOPTION/FOSTER ADVICE

We help Romanians (especially faithful Christians) foster and adopt children. We guide them through the legal process that is best for them. And, we make sure they are prepared for the special parenting these children need.

POST-ADOPTION/FOSTER COUNSELING

We believe that parents are the most important people to a child. And, parents are the primary counselors of a child. That is why support groups for adoptive families, camp and private counseling are a huge part of what we do. Abandoned children have very specific needs. So, we teach specialized tools to our adoptive/foster parents.

TRAINING FOR PROFESSIONALS

We offer local Romanian government and non-profit organizations training. Among our initiatives is a three day training in ``Trauma Compitent Caregiving`` developed by Dr. David and Jayne Schooler. We partner with other organizations in the Alliance for a Romania without Orphans to offer this training around Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

WHY ADOPTION AND FOSTER CARE IN ROMANIA?

SINCE THE BEGINNING OF MANKIND FAMILY HAS BEEN THE STRUCTURE FOR RAISING CHILDREN.  ORPHANAGES ARE NOT A NATURAL PLACE FOR CHILDREN TO GROW UP.

THE BIBLE IS FULL OF COMMANDS TO CARE FOR THE FATHERLESS.  HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES:

BEFORE THE LAW: JOB 31:16-23, “If I have withheld anything that the poor desired, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail, or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of it (for from my youth the fatherless grew up with me as with a father, and from my mother’s womb I guided the widow), if I have seen anyone perish for lack of clothing, or the needy without covering, if his body has not blessed me, and if he was not warmed with the fleece of my sheep, if I have raised my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate, then let my shoulder blade fall from my shoulder, and let my arm be broken from its socket.“

THE LAW OF MOSES: DEUTERONOMY 24:19-21, “When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.  When you beat your olive trees, you shall not go over them again. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.  When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not strip it afterward. It shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.”

WISDOM LITERATURE: PSALM 68:5-6, “Father of the fatherless and Protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.  God settles the solitary in a home; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a parched land.”

THE PROPHETS: ISAIAH 1:17-18, “Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes; Cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.  “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool.”

THE NEW TESTAMENT: JAMES 1:27, “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”

THE BIBLE USES ADOPTION TO DESCRIBE GOD’S RELATIONSHIP TOWARD HIS PEOPLE.

EPHESIANS 1:4-6, “In love, he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.”

SIN HAS SEPARATED US FROM GOD.  THROUGH FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST WE CAN BE ADOPTED INTO GOD’S FAMILY.

ADOPTION AND FOSTER CARE ARE THE BEST OPTIONS.

NO INSTITUTION, NO MATTER HOW WELL ORGANIZED, IS AS HEALTHY AS A LOVING FAMILY.  INSTITUTIONS CAN PROVIDE MATERIAL NEEDS.  INSTITUTIONS CAN PROVIDE EDUCATION.  BUT, THE RELATIONSHIP OF A MOTHER AND A FATHER TO A CHILD CANNOT BE REPLACED WITH EMPLOYEES WHO ROTATE.  IT WOULD BE LIKE REPLACING A SPOUSE WITH A TEAM OF EMPLOYED SPOUSES ON A ROTATING SCHEDULE.  IT IS AN UNNATURAL SYSTEM THAT DOES NOT TEACH CHILDREN THE LIFE LESSONS HELPFUL TO ONE DAY HAVE A HEALTHY FAMILY THEMSELVES.

CHILDREN GROW QUICKLY.  THEY CANNOT WAIT FOR THEIR PARENTS OR AN INSTITUTION TO GET BETTER.  THAT IS WHY WE HELP ROMANIANS FOSTER AND ADOPT CHILDREN.  BECAUSE IT IS WHAT THE KIDS NEED.

ADOPTION ISN’T JUST BETTER EMOTIONALLY, BUT PHYSICALLY TOO.

PARENTAL LOVE IS NECESSARY FOR NORMAL BRAIN DEVELOPMENT.  HARVARD DID A STUDY IN ROMANIA TO SEE THE EFFECTS OF INSTITUTIONALIZATION.  THEIR CONCLUSIONS WERE CLEAR, BRAIN SCANS SHOW MEASURABLE, PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CHILDREN WHO ARE INSTITUTIONALIZED AND CHILDREN WHO GROW UP IN FAMILY.  BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS CHILDREN TAKEN FROM INSTITUTIONS AND PLACED INTO FAMILIES HAVE VISIBLE IMPROVEMENT.

YOU CAN SEE THE HARVARD STUDY HERE:

ADOPTION AND FOSTER CARE ARE ALREADY THE NORM IN WESTERN EUROPE AND WILL BE IN ROMANIA ALSO.

ROMANIAN SOCIETY IS CHANGING.  CURRENTLY GOVERNMENTAL AND NONGOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES ARE PLACING CHILDREN IN GROUP HOMES INSTEAD OF THE LARGE INSTITUTIONAL ORPHANAGES THAT WERE INFAMOUS IN ROMANIA YEARS AGO.

THIS IS A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.  BUT IT STILL IS NOT THE BEST.  CHILDREN IN THESE INSTITUTIONS HAVE ALL THEIR MATERIAL NEEDS MET, BUT THEY STILL NEED FAMILY.  THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR LOVE.  A CHILD’S RELATIONSHIP TO THEIR MOM AND DAD IS THE TEMPLATE FOR THEIR FUTURE RELATIONSHIPS.  ADOPTION AND FOSTER CARE WILL BUILD A STRONGER SOCIETY BY TEACHING CHILDREN HOW TO LOVE.

WE BELIEVE ROMANIAN SOCIETY WILL SOON MOVE ON FROM GROUP HOMES TO ADOPTION AND FOSTER CARE.  THIS WILL BE A DIFFICULT TRANSITION FOR SOME INSTITUTIONS.  IT WILL MEAN A LOWER BUDGET AND LESS CONTROL.  BUT WE ALL NEED TO PLACE THE NEEDS OF CHILDREN ABOVE OUR INTERESTS.
